It Could Be Worse

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 2653

"Trust you?!" Fred hollered. The Lord of Suffex was pissed. Here he was wandering around lost in the woods with a talking bear. He was cold and he was hungry and that stupid bear had locked up all of his rations inside of a chest instead of handing them over like any decent bear with half a brain would have. Not that he was really a bear, oh no, the mangy brute claimed to be Bruno the local drunk, and that probably explained his lack of half a brain. And now the damn bear was asking him if he trusted him! "If I didn't trust you would I have come all the way out here with you?!"

"That's true," Bruno had to admit, "but if you trust me so much why won't you let me help you find someone who can read this darn book? And why is your hand constantly gripping your sword hilt?"

"Because it makes me feel better!" Fred snapped. "That's why! And just to let you know, it makes me feel better having a good grip on my favorite, double-edged, sharp as glass, fighting sword because there's every reason in the world for me to believe that you're a servant of the Dragon and NOT some poor wretched victim of his and that this whole little plot to find someone who can read, READ for jiminy's sakes, is all just a ruse to sidetrack me, catch me with my guard down, and then eat me!"

Fred spat out the last few words and then huffed loudly at the bear. To say that Bruno was taken aback by the outburst would have been an understatement and to Fred's chagrin the talking Bear immediately sat down and began to cry. "Ohhhh, now come on," Fred said encouragingly. "It's not all that bad. Sure, you're stuck in the body of a big, smelly bear and at the first sign of trouble I won't think twice about sticking you with my sword, but it could be worse."

"How?" Bruno asked despondently.

Fred thought for a moment and then said, "Well at least we're not being attacked by cannibalistic forest fairies that only come out when the moon is full. Oh, look! The sky is finally clearing, and there's a lovely moon out." "Is it full?" Bruno asked without looking up. "Why yes," Fred answered, "but don't worry about what I said about the forest fairies. It's not like they're suddenly going to appear just because I happened to mention them a moment ago." Fred and Bruno then noticed a buzzing sound that was quickly filling the woods around them.

  1. Cannibalistic forest fairies or the dancing dwarf gazoo brigade. You decide!
