"We're making good time," Fred said, gazing down at the wide landscape of
valleys and forests, dominated by the ever snow-swept Carpaths. They
were now within the realm of the Bavar, and Goldstadt was but an hour or
so's ride away. The full moon allowed them a good view of their
surroundings, and their spirits were uplifted. Axtun had been an utterly
depressing place. Their horses, though thickset and stubby, were well suited for this type of terrain. Jarvis and Jernicus were forced to share a mount, Jarvis riding bitch. He had been disgruntled for the first couple hours, but had gradually come to accept his disposition for the moment. He had enjoyed his role in Axtun much more. And anyway he didn't have a choice, he had never had a horse, and thus never learned to ride. The journey had been rough at first, the roads frought with peril and even disappearing altogether at some points as they meandered their way further into the highlands. Sometimes only the bones of other unlucky travellers or bits and peices of an old wagon wheel and other remains that were littered and strewn about the rugged ravines and ditches would mark their way. After a few hours they had emerged from the gloom of Axtun and into the pleasant Carpathian hills. The road they were now traversing was well-paved, but seemed to be a lesser route through the the vales of the Bavar, which was all the better, as far as they were concerned."I can't believe I got myself mixed up in all of this," Jarvis complained. "You know, you Allarians are very violent people!" "Our violence is justified, Jarvis," Fred retorted sharply. "You have no idea how important my quest to destroy Castellan is. Nothing can stand in my way. Nothing. Who knows what the Baron's intentions were for us, but no one strong arms me into doing anything. Castellan must be destroyed. The fate of the northlands depends on it." "The fate of the world," Jernicus added gravely. "Lord Fred is right. You should feel proud of your station and role in all of this, lowly though it may be...""We will find many allies in Goldstadt," Fred grinned, spurring his horse onward, "the Dark Heretic has never been popular in that city." sniff! sniff! "I still smell an elfie!" said Jarvis, looking over his shoulder suspiciously. "You sure do attract strange folks, Lord Fred."
