Astra's Dilemma

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 25387

As Astra climbed down the rusty iron ladder, the hatch above her head suddenly swung closed with a ponderous groan. Astra gasped in surprise and hurried back up to bang on the hatch with her chains. All in vain - as she could already hear the hatch being locked.

"Who's up there!" Astra demanded. "Open up at once so I can beat the living daylights out of... er, I mean, so we can be friends!"

"Foolish creature." hissed an ominous, keening voice from the other side. "You should not have come here and disturbed this ancient place. Now, you will never leave."

Astra kept banging and yelling, but the hatch did not open and the voice did not speak again. There was nothing to do but keep climbing toward that orange-red glow.

As she descended, the light became brighter and brighter, and Astra thought she could hear a strange rustling, crackling, slurping sound. She hurried downward and soon arrived at the top of a massive cavern, from the center of which the blinding light originated. Astra stared slack-jawed at an extraordinary sight. Giant strands of what appeared to be living, pulsating flesh stretched from the corners of the cave to its center, where a huge, bubbling, throbbing organic mass was suspended from the strands. The mass seemed to be emitting the light from its very pores.

Curious, Astra climbed down until the ladder ended, and jumped the rest of the way down. Disbalanced by her chains, she stumbled and skinned her knees. Cursing, she climbed to her feet and immediately heard a strange, growling voice echo in her mind "What art thou, and why hast thou chosen to disturb me?"

Astra responded in a manner that was...

  1. Hostile.
  2. Friendly.
  3. Obsequious.
