Astra's memories of the last few minutes were hazy, but she was
pleasantly surprised to find that she was still alive. She breathed in
great
gulps of air, while the burning feeling in her chest gradually subsided,
her pulse rate slowed, and the red mist in front of her eyes faded.
After another five minutes, she felt well enough to wonder where she was. She would have expected to be able to see Korval's glowstone and also to hear her companions - for the sound of talking carried a long way in the caves. But there was only total darkness and complete silence. She was puzzled, for when they had circumnavigated the lake they had not found any channel going into or out of it. Thus the others should not be too far away. Was it possible that the creature had dragged her through some underground waterway into a separate cave? She must be lying on the shore, since her legs were still in the water. Scrambling to her feet, she let out an "eek", for her hand had brushed against something clammy and quite different in its texture from rock or sand. She realised that it was the body of the monster. It wasn't moving, so she hoped that she had killed it. Attempting to explore in total darkness would be risky, but would it be any safer to stay where she was and hope that sooner or later the others would find her?
