The Never Ending Quest - Episode 25257

Fertal

"That could be dangerous...," I say, "But you're right that we can't just kill her in cold blood. We'll get her side of the story first if we can."

To be frank, though my heart urges me into action, I find that it does not rule all my actions! Not to say that I feel it having a....bigger part in things.....just....

I may no longer be a human being, but it does not mean I'm an animal, driven only by desires and needs. I still can make plans, use logic.... I and she are not creatures of the moment, though..... Though I must admit I (and Artizza) seem more prone to go with intuition and impulse. Well, that is that, alas, but I can live with it. Not like I have any real desire to return to being human, for goodness sake!

....

Hm, just realized that my desire to stay elfin is as strong as what it had been to remain human when I was human. Will have to reflect on that later, when there's time!

The thing here is that I do not recall any of the details of the betrayal almost done to us by those we'd thought were our friends and people, but the impression we still have with however we won free teaches us still this one thing. Do not trust blindly! At least take some measures to make sure that those you're going to do....business with are worthy of that trust!

Another impression (amongst the many blanks within my mind from the time Tursil almost tricked us up into the treetops until finding myself and my wife.....

....

I....believe we are wed. The nonmagical white gold rings I and she wear (matching set) seem to.....tell me that.

Frankly, that's not how marriages are shown in my land, but.....

....

Anyway, from the time between Tursil trying to trick us up into the treetops and finding ourselves within the magic summoning circle, still....celebrating our wedding night...

....the impression is that once we are done with our business here (whatever it turns out to be but we feel involves saving this world from Hell) we will be returning to our actual friends and family! Our actual people!

Would rather return to them with a clear conscious, knowing that we did not kill an innocent woman for the wrong reasons. That and frankly I'd like to do the right and honorable thing.

Hm, yet another thing that translated over....

Besides, whilst I and Artizza did not detect any falsehood within the mages tales, I have to question the....means they're employing.

Yes, must question that indeed. See, they do not know us being different from other Dark Elves. Guess I should call us proto-Dark Elves (Dark Elves being devoted to evil and all that and we not being). Anyway, maybe desperation gives rise to desperate measures and thus summoning monsters (for Dark Elves are monsters) to save this world....but then again the fact that they, these secretive mages, have spells who can summon such as that! From what I know of mages of my world, those of good bent don't.....tread those paths.

So we kept our tongues still (even after looking oh so pleasantly pissed after getting over the shock of an...audience) and listened to them stumble over why they had summoned us.

Apparently (mistakenly) believing whatever preparations they'd put into the summoning spell would bind us to this task, they told us the details of our mission. Okay, the boiled down details of what I and Artizza were to do was to do you already know. However, you're probably wondering just how they'd targeted this Rebecca?

Why ruin impressions, since I had feared that they might have try to do violence to us if we'd proven less...controlled. That and after we'd heard what they'd want....well, put it this way. The longer they feel we're under their sway, the less time they'll have in attempting yet another summoning spell....

Have yet another impression that such a summoning would be doomed to failure for some reason, but....why take chances? After all, I and Artizza will have our hands full even without a band of elfin assassins mucking things up. That I feel will be what we'll be facing, I fear.

As for what means they'd used...

It's this way. The mages use a low powered, primitive but effective means of divination to find out a broad area that the biggest threat is to this world. Apparently they'd been surprise such a method worked when others had failed, but that's that. Anyway, with that information us elves were given the general area and the Mages, hoping that the reputation of skilled hunters for Dark Elves (I figure they feel it was a well earned reputation), hope that we'll track down Rebecca (and bypass security measures) soon afterwards.

Oh, we're going to have to ask around, acting like we want to join up with these New Amazons that we are told Rebecca is joined with (a fact that the Mages have learned through some now dead fool named Samuel). Being that we are obviously not human would hardly draw a blink, considering all the oddness of recent, so we'd go in to recounter as we would have under the Mage's plan. Thing is, we're going to do this to not only to decide the best way in and out (and perhaps at Rebecca once we match her with the magical seeming the mages provided us before we'd left)....but also to listen in and see if we can actually GET her side of things!

And if we find we must kill her....then...

But I'll be damned if I'll go in blindly and do this deed without at least trying to get her side!

Nearly had been that too close to that condition already, thanks!!

But we must be quick, for we do not have much time left before things could go to Hell here....

Later....

After nearly flying their horse to exhaustion in haste....

After quiet a few false starts....

After a bit of luck and using more than a little of that mysterious Fey sense they have now...

Some breaks...

So they soon fly their horse and start asking some of the more....friendly natives about the New Amazons, making out as non-humans seeking protection and something...better in life now...

  1. Artizza tells their tale, pausing to scratch her nose afterwards, an itch not being able to be denied....
