With the Dragon's death, his spells which had kept the Southern Caves
stable for so many decades had broken down. Stresses and strains in the
rock once more made themselves felt, with all the greater violence for
having been suppressed for so long.
As Fred evaded Sir Korval's initial lunge, a rapidly growing rumbling sound was heard. It was loud enough to make both knights pause in their fighting. Then suddenly great cracks opened up in the floor and the walls of the tunnel, and the four heroes - or three heroes and a villain, depending on your point of view - found themselves falling. Fred screamed (tenor), Korval screamed (baritone), Astra screamed (contralto). Unfortunately any possiblility of four-part harmony was spoilt by Velus only being able to yowl. It seemed like they were falling for minutes on end, but that may have been a slight exaggeration. But they certainly fell many hundreds - maybe even thousands - of feet. It seemed certain that they would die instantly when they hit bottom. The only good thing was that the piece of wall that Astra was attached to was bashed into a protruding spur of rock on the way down and disintegrated.
