Elsewhere

Far away from the desolate island which Fred and Astra had come to in such mysterious circumstances, and where they had had the misfortune to sleep in a very dangerous place, a cloud the size of a man's fist winked into view. It grew rapidly larger, and then - when it was some thirty feet across - from it emerged two creatures of nightmare, at the ends of fiery leashes which led back into the cloud. Within the cloud could occasionally be seen glimpses of a female figure at the same time terrifying and yet beautiful.

"We have come to the right place," the soft voice of Shiva thundered in the minds of Death and Despair. They yowled in response. She went on; "I can sense that he is nearby. We shall fight again, the necromancer and I, as we did centuries ago. But this time the result will be different...

1. "I sense that you, Despair, have been here before, [14229] though I think that you did not get to meet the necromancer. Well, you shall meet him very soon."
2. "I sense that you both have been here before. Vincent may think that his black tower will protect him, but he will soon be disabused." (Vincent tended not to mention that his many talents included necromancy.)
3. "I know neither of you have ever been here - but it matters not. You know your target by heart."
