The Source of the Light

Then they turned a corner, and found themselves in a brilliantly lit chamber hewn from the rock. The source of the light was a floating glass ball which glowed so brightly that, if they looked directly at it and then away, it caused a dark after-image in their vision for a second or two afterwards.

"Fantastic!" Chuc breathed. "This ball must have been set glowing before the Ravage occurred, and has been doing so ever since, through many generations. The long-dead mage who did this must have been of awesome power. And look at all those leather-bound books on that shelf over there. If their contents haven't crumbled away into dust, and if they're only in a script that I can read and a language that I know, then just think what I might learn from them!"

1. Chuc goes over to investigate the books.
2. They are startled by a voice from behind them. "Awesome power, indeed. But thanks to that power, I am not long-dead - indeed not even recently dead. When all other people fled eastwards, I alone remained behind, protected by my magic."
