Fred, who now was also naked (hence his glyphs being visible), looked up
from his examination of his body.
But before he could give any opinion on the possible meaning of the symbol
that they now both carried many times over, there was a loud grating noise.
Then a crack became visible in the massive stone block that might once have
been an altar. Slowly but steadily the split widened, until there was a gap
of four feet between the two halves. Revealed within the gap was the
entrance to a passageway lined with blocks of stone, that descended into
the
floor at an angle of about thirty degrees.
Fred and Astra looked at each other. "I feel that if there's an explanation to all this then it must lie at the further end of that passage," Fred said. "Of course, it could be a trap, but..." "But you are willing to risk it. So am I. Come." With that, they entered the passage. The tunnel extended in a straight line so that the light faded only slowly. As it got darker, it gradually became possible to see that somewhere at the further end was a pulsing white light. After about a hundred yards they emerged into a large underground chamber. At its centre was a large block of stone, and mounted on it was a glass globe some two feet in diameter. Over a repeating two second cycle, it would glow so brightly that it almost hurt the eyes and then fade back to black.
