Turning back towards Fred, Astra gave him a broad wink. If she had really
thought that the berries would have had a bad effect, she would have been
more than happy to let Robert eat them. As it was, she had recalled an old
wives' tale that her nanny had told her when she was a small girl,
concerning purple berries, and had decided to try to frighten Robert with
it. The wink was intended to let Fred in on the secret, in case he was
worrying that his own heart was not quite as pure as he would wish.
"What are you winking at me for?" Fred asked innocently. Astra gave an exasperated sigh. She should have known that Fred wouldn't catch on. "The story about turning into a were-clown if your heart isn't pure was just an old wives' tale I was told as a child," she admitted. "I expect that the berries are perfectly harmless." "And there was I thinking that you cared about my welfare," Robert said with a grin. "Well, I still have a funny feeling about them," Alexis said. "I'm not going to have any." She looked on as the others gorged themselves. After that they resumed walking through the jungle. A couple of hours later, the sun began to sink in the west, and they looked for a good spot to spend the night. Then the full moon rose in the east. Many a true word is spoken in jest. It just so happened that the old wives' tale that Astra's nanny had told her was true.
