Fred was about to tear a strip from his already ragged clothing to bind
the wound in Astra's arm when she stopped him. "Your clothes are none too
clean," she pointed out. (This was a polite way of saying that they were
absolutely filthy.) "I don't want to run a risk of the wound becoming
infected. Tear a strip from my own clothing. I'd do it myself, but the
exertion might increase the bleeding."
As Fred bandaged the wound, he said: "I hope the baby will be all right. Throwing yourself about like that in your condition wasn't very wise, you know." Astra made a face. "In the heat of the moment, I'd forgotten that I was pregnant," she admitted. "But given the terrible things that she said about poor Velus, I'd probably do the same again. Anyway, my mother went into battle at the head of her troops when she was seven months pregnant with me, and it didn't do me any harm." "There's no sign of Alura now," Fred said. "She just disappeared into that thick patch of jungle over there. I don't think there's any use trying to chase after her." "I agree. Hopefully that's the last we'll see of her... Hey, isn't that Velus coming down the mountainside, though he's lost most of his fur? He must have survived after all!" [22889-2]
