But before Astra could begin her tale, Fred interjected a question. "Sir
gnome," said he. "Do you know anything about a tongueless man that roams
these hills? He led us through the night and brought us very near the
vicinity of your door. Then he laughed at us and ran away..." "I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about," the gnome cooly replied. "I didn't think any men inhabited this region, quite honestly. Now where we, Astra?" "He looked to be a trapper," Fred continued, cutting Astra short once again. "I wonder if he thought an ogre lived here, having seen your door guard. That'd make sense...""My, you all must have worked up quite an appetite, eh?" The gnome asked suddenly. "I forgot I have a stew going in the other room there. I think you'll enjoy it! I'll go fetch us up some bowls and then Astra here can tell us her story!" Everyone was famished, so this seemed like a fine idea. Moments later the gnome returned balancing a tray with four steaming bowls. The portions were gnome-sized and small, but the gnome reassured them there was plenty more. The odour that wafted up to meet their nostrils and then lingered in the air was delightful. The stew itself had finely chopped bits of tender meat and big chunks potatoes, with some herbs and pepper to give it added flavor. They were soon helping themselves to seconds, and thirds, and fourths, and..."I must admit, good gnome, that I've never tasted anything like this," Fred praised, slurping up another heaping spoonful. "What kind of meat did you use? It's so tender it melts in my mouth!" A dark expression came over the gnome's face, but quickly passed. "I'm glad you asked," he said with a wide grin. "But I'm afraid it's my secret recipe. I'll tell you what, if Astra here indulges us with her story then maybe afterward I'll clue you in on the meat."Astra thought something about all of this was odd, but she kept that to herself.
