"The Master has a similar offer for you," the Guard told Fred. "It is a
private offer, so perhaps I should make another adjustment to the woman's
bandages." With that, Astra's ears too were covered, leaving only her eyes
and her nostrils free. Not only could she no longer intervene in the
conversation, she could not even hear it. She looked daggers at the Dark
Elf, but she was totally unperturbed by the hatred in Astra's gaze.
With Astra dealt with, the Guard continued: "Offer your fealty to the Master, and you shall be healed." "You seemed to be willing to offer healing to the Princess without any pre-conditions," Fred observed. "Up to a point, yes. The Master will speed the natural healing of her body. But teeth do not regrow themselves, nor scars ever wholly disappear. At least, so I am told that it is for humankind. If she wants to be beautiful again - for I understand that your race believed her so - then this too can be arranged through the Master's magic, but only so long as she co-operates fully. You, Lord Fred, I judge not to be one readily swayed by vanity, so your own offer has to be a little different. But you need not think that you will be treated less favourably, for to you we offer - in addition to healing - a magical enhancement to your strength and endurance, plus the chance to practise with the Dark Elves and learn our combat techniques. No human before you has ever received such an offer. Just think, you could be the greatest warrior that your race has ever produced!" Similar thoughts of fame swirled through Fred's mind to those which Astra had experienced a short while before.
