"Lord Fred?" Reaibn asks. His left eye twitches. "Yes?" replies Fred. "Um...I've gone like nuts and stuff. I'm...you better run." Reaibn's right nostril vanishes, leaving a reddened patch of skin. "Excuse me?" A jet of fire, absolutely silent, burst out of the floor inches in front of Reaibn. "Look!" he cried. "Just go! Go, go, go! Cross the border and you will...DIE HORRIBLE...don't listen to that! Across the border you will be safe!" Then the all the curtains, excepting the bits Astra wore, turned into snakes. Fred and Astra weren't dumb. They ran. And discovered they had super speed. Villages and trees flashed by, all blurred. The air around them went blue...and then bam! They stumbled to a stop on a wagon track surrounded by fields of corn. Set in the ground a few feet away was a white fence post. "What in the name of the Queen was that?" Astra panted. She was near collapse, with her hands on her knees and her hair pointing every which way. Fred looked over her bent form. He gasped, grabbed Astra by the shoulders and flung her past the white post. He then leapt himself, landing in a jumble on her far side. SPLICH! The two looked up. Something wet and red and large was sliding down an invisible barrier. The 'wall' lined up with the white post. "Let me guess." said Astra. "Border marker." "Yeah." breathed Fred as the thing made a puddle. It built up against the border but spread across the tracks to the corn. Each stalk it touched vanished. "Now come on. My old self-defense teacher has a school nearby. He'll let us hang around if we promise to teach the students something." "As long as he has a decent pair of clothes I wouldn't care if he was the Demon Prince Bob. These curtains itch!" And so twenty minutes later they are walking up the long, wooden polished pathway.
