After a while, Lady Andrea's panic abated, and she realised that
remaining in the horseless carriage wasn't going to get her anywhere,
either literally or metaphorically. The men who had killed her driver so
that they could steal the horses had obviously not been aware, or had not
cared, that the coach had contained a passenger. Doubtless they were long
gone by now, since the sun was already well up in the sky, so it would be
pointless to keep on worrying about them.
Meanwhile she was a day's coach journey from home, which would mean two or three days' travel if she had to return on foot. Even the nearest settlement owing allegiance to Croix Keep would be the best part of a day away. And as her driver had warned her (and how she wished now that she had taken his advice), the road leading towards home was but little travelled. She made her breakfast from the supplies that the coach had carried, then made herself up a pack to carry on her back, and started walking:
