"Death to the monsters!" screamed the rabble of the ghetto. Many now had
farm implements in their hands, as well as many varieties of knife. The
soldiers had yet to break through the crowd.
"Armor from times past!?!" yelled Fred. "This isn't right!" yelled Irena. "We must flee for not even I am sure if this is an apparition or not!" Irena grabbed Fred's right arm and led him hurriedly down the empty side of the alley. "Halt!" yelled a guardsman. "Death!" yelled the mob. Fred's mind was a whirlwind; his legs were running, his body guided by the firm grasp of the warrior-woman, what is happening? That, indeed, was the question of the moment. But no answer was forthcoming. The alleyway opened up to a wider street within this poverty-stricken, stinking ghetto, and Fred felt his guide turn right. But a days cart-ride to the west, within the baileywick of Lepan, the Bailiff Yem Dougal hurriedly wrote his message. My HighLord Gerard, my Men have just come Back from the Borders with King Armen. We are on good Rights with that King and he has given us leave to survey the Lands still further westwards. On the fortnight last my Men saw a strange sight - a Mist forming in the shape of Man. It hung in the night-sky as silent as the Netherworld. Later it melted as if never there being. What omen this brings I know not, but I felt it right to bring the News to your ears. As to our primary work, our Eyes and Ears are in the Western Lands, if any enemy makes a move surely we shall know it. Yem folded the message and wrapped it into a bundle. This he gave to the Horseman and away he rode. before the sinking of the sun you shall reach Caemlyn. thought Yem. hellions that our beloved City be so close to the western border. One day, aye, one day we shall take the western lands and Allaria shall become a great kingdom!
