The Interrogation Continues (Part II)

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 23391

Irena looked Captain Alaric straight in the eye, and answered his question. "I do not know why I am here. I am not even sure exactly where 'here' is, sir. I have much more to fear from you than you do from me. I have no power or intention of doing anyone any harm."

The Captain replied, in an officious tone, "Miss Irena, please see this from my point of view. Camelyn, as you should know, is beset by enemies, both outside and within the city." He glanced at Father Benedict, who did not react. "This is a bad time for a pair that look like a beggar and a prostitute to suddenly appear in town. This is very much more true if that pair cannot tell me the simple facts of where they come from, and their business inside town. I shall have to hold you in gaol. While it does provide a roof of sorts, it is not the sort of lodging that you will like. So please stop trifling with me and tell me who you are and what your intentions are."

"Are you of the House of Heron?" Fred asked, in a flat, emotionless voice.

"I shall be the one that asks the questions, villein. Is there anyone in the town that can vouch for you?"

  1. "Perhaps," said Fred. "I am of the House of Heron, although I have never been in this city before. I may be able to prove this."
  2. Fred remained silent. The captain sent the prisoners to separate cells in the bowels of the gaol. "I should like a word with you, Father Benedict," requested the captain, less harshly than Father Benedict expected.
