a Way Out

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 2332

Fred and Thessamar discussed their situation with Arthur; though he was still a stranger, they felt that his actions were not those of one in league with the dragon. They spoke of Fred's Quest and Thessamar's curse, of the skeletal scribes and the ominous scroll, of strange visions and a damned little dog. As they talked, the fog slowly dissipated revealing the boat which Arthur had used to get to this area of the Southern Caves, they also saw that the mud which they had nearly slipped into was the bank of a wide river.

"But how did you get here?" asked Lord Fred.

"You don't know?" asked Arthur incredulously. "Why ALL school children know of these Caves and how to get to them, though few would ever try. You say you seek to kill the dragon, which you also call a wyrm; and I name it 'snake', a snake that has swam on the western wave whose crest is ruby red. He is long as a city street, and he eats the dead. You ask me how I got to be here, and my eyes open wide, for ALL good students know that there's a hole in the bottom of the sea, a hole where the snake goes down. And he waits in the bottom of the sea for the men that drown. This is something that sailors verily understand: that there is far more sea than sand, there is far more sea than land."

"But that's crazy!" contested Thessamar. "We are in the Northern Caves, below the Shreik'n Mountains, not at the bottom of the sea!"

"That's right!" agreed Fred. "Though I call this place the Southern Caves and the Mountains be named Shreken, I do know that we are Not at the bottom of the sea!"

"I know what I know, and I know how I got here," answered Arthur. Then he swept his arm towards the even-keeled boat. "This boat floats on this here river, a subterranean river. The river goes some many kilometers up that way," he pointed up stream. "Only two or three kilometers from here lies my vessel, my submersible. It lies in a cavern, vast and wide as if carved out by some giant in ancient times. By going down under the waters you will find an underwater opening in the rock that leads to the sea. Upwards and far beyond you will find my own native country."

"Then that is how we shall leave these accursed caverns!" shouted Fred excitedly. "We must go back to the Great Kingdom. The Lady Thessamar and I must report our discoveries to the King and we must re-equip ourselves for the return so that we may battle the fiendish dragon, and whatever other minions it may have. Will you help us?"

  1. "Yes"
  2. "No"
