Fred continues running into the deepening darkness, further into the
surreal wood where the air is thick(stifling even) and heavy...and
deathly quiet. He silently curses as his every footfall echoes through the
whispering trees, the heavy thud of his boots and their murmuring the only
other sound to break the defining silence. His one condolence is the fact
that
the angry chorus of shouting voices is becoming increasingly muffled as he
steadily puts more distance between
himself and Vjorica. The night-fog grows even thicker as he goes, and he's
soon stumbling about like a blind man.
"Do you really think that this forest will offer you protection in the bitter hours after dusk?" says a voice from the darkness. "Don't let the silence fool you! These woods still cling to life, and its dark denizens are not always as courteous as I! You should really watch your step, you're nosier than a drunken dwarf!! You nearly plowed me over!!" "Who said that!?" Fred exclaims. "Reveal yourself, coward!"The mists part and a tall, wiry elf leaps into the clearing. "Tah dah!" he cries. "I am Quirlos, the Elf!" He wears green clothing and a bow across his chest. "Stand back, foe," Fred warns menacingly, "lest I should be forced to smite you down where you stand!""Coward? Foe!? Smite me down?" Quirlos laughs. "If I had thought you an enemy you'd have been dead before you knew what hit you! But I know what brings you here to my neck of the woods! Indeed, I've been waiting for your arrival - as it was prophesied by the Queen Mother! We share a common enemy, clumsy ass! That rapscallion Castellan shall be the death of the Duchy yet! With his meddling in the arts of Chaos, he is draining all the remaining life out of these woods - and with it, our elven magicks! The Queen Mother hasn't been able to muster enough strength for one of the Great Blessings in weeks! So let's go egg his front porch and T.P. his yard this very night! It'll perfect vengeance, mageslayer!" "But...How did - who are you!?"The diminishing sound of the angry mob had almost disappeared entirely, but now it is growing steadily louder once again. "There's no time for this!" Fred exclaims. "I've got to get out of here!"Quirlos shakes his head. "Do you think you'll be any safer running in that direction! Come, follow me before you get yourself killed - or worst!"
