Hopeless

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 23164

For the next several hours Fred spent his time in a fruitless search for a way to escape. The door to the room was both solid and unmovable, and there were no windows or other means of access into or out of the room. It became clear to him that only Synizn could release them from this underground prison cell. Likewise there was nothing in the room that Fred could use to overcome Synizn with when, or if, he returned. Nothing Fred could use as a weapon. Nothing Fred could use to change the odds even a little bit into his favor.

Finally, in complete frustration, Fred gave up his efforts and simply began to pace around.

Astra though had spent the time in quiet exercise; rubbing her legs, kneading her muscles, stretching her body. Weak from two days of supernaturally induced sleep, two days of no food or water, Astra wasn't in the best of condition. She intended to remedy that as quickly as possible. Happily, Synizn's potion did much to restore her so she wasn't a complete invalid.

When Fred finally tired of walking back and forth he sat down onto the bunk next to Astra's. She looked at him but he was staring elsewhere and he did not say a word. So she spoke instead. "We've been in tight spots before this, all is not lost."

Suddenly and without warning Fred grabbed the nearby pitcher and threw it against the wall, shattering it into a million pieces. "I gave up everything!" Fred cried out in anguish. "And for what?!"

Astra gazed at Fred anxiously, she had never seen her friend so distraught. "Fred, what's the matter with you?"

Now Fred did turn his gaze to Astra, and she didn't like what she saw in his eyes. "Synizn isn't going to help us," Fred sneered. "He's got what he wanted, what Malachi fought Minestus to get. That damn Crystallic. We brought it here, I gave it to him, and now he doesn't need us anymore! And you know as well as I that Malachi's promise means nothing. And I knew that from the start. I knew it! Dammit Astra, I'm a Dragon Slayer, I slay Dragons. I don't make deals with them, I don't ally myself with them. I kill them. But I broke every vow I ever took and I did make a deal with a Dragon and I did ally myself with it!"

Astra stared at Fred and she saw a man twisted and defeated by anger and hate. But more than anything else she saw a man in pain. The pain of dishonor, the pain of betrayal. Fred had betrayed everything that made him who he was. All so he could become human again. And what did he have to show for it? Nothing.

  1. But Astra isn't so ready to give up all hope...
