Captives of the Dragon-Man

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 23163

Still holding the Crystallic gingerly in his hand Synizn strode toward the door of the room. He opened it and then turned back to Fred. "Come with me if you wish to see the female."

Fred stood up on his little demifox legs and hurried after the dragon-man, he had few other choices. They passed down a hall whose earthen walls were lined at intervals with strong timbers. It was like a mine shaft, so wherever they were it was definitely underneath the ground. At the end of the hall was another door, the hallway though took a turn to the right and Fred could see steps at the end of it which led upward. Synizn stopped at the door and opened it. Fred followed him inside.

This room was smaller than the other one and seemed to be a sleeping quarters. There were two bunks and a crude dresser. A pitcher and wash basin were set next to a dirty mirror. Fred took all this in at a glance but what immediately grabbed his attention was Astra sleeping soundly on one of the bunks. He hurried to her side. "She is still under the spell Ringroot placed upon her," Synizn explained. "There is a cup there; force some of the liquid down her throat and she will awaken."

Fred quickly gave Astra some of the strange smelling potion and just as quickly she fluttered her eyes and sat up. "Fred! What happened?" Without answering Fred turned back to Synizn but found that the dragon-man was gone and that the door was now shut. He rose to his feet and rushed at the door but found it locked. "Damn!" he cried with frustration.

Having suddenly woken up to a confused situation, Astra immediately sought to go to Fred's aid. When she tried to stand though she found that she had no strength and she fell back to the bed. "What's going on Fred?!" she exclaimed. He turned to her and spat out, "Dammit Astra, we were fools to make deals with dragons!"

With resignation he walked back and sat down on the bunk next to Astra's. He then told her everything that had happened in the last two days since Ringroot had cast her into her deep sleep. Astra was amazed at his story and was just as anxious as he was about how their situation had now changed. No longer prisoners of the demifoxes they were now prisoners of Synizn.

"Asleep for two days," Astra mused, "no wonder I feel so weak." Fred nodded, "Yes, but at least your weakness isn't permanent. As for everything else that's been done to us (Fred raised one hairy paw and scowled at it), I'm afraid we aren't as lucky."

"But Malachi promised us that Synizn would use the Crystallic to return to us our humanity," Astra replied, although without much conviction.

"Malachi lied!" Fred hissed. "And what else should I have expected from a damn dragon! And Synizn had the gall to admit it! That the real reason Malachi wanted us to give him the Crystallic wasn't for our good but was for his!"

Silence filled the room then, for what else was there to say? Fred and Astra were still trapped in the forms of demifoxes. And though Synizn now had the Crystallic there was no reason to believe he would use it to help them. Instead of aiding them he had used them. Instead of welcoming them he had trapped them in a locked room somewhere beneath the ground.

  1. What help then could they now hope from Synizn, regardless of what Malachi had told them?
