The moonlight was bright enough for Fred and Astra to make their way down
the mountain path without much risk of harming themselves. As they
descended, though, Fred became increasingly uneasy. "Things always look
different at night, so it's hard to be sure," he said. "But I don't
recognise any of this. I don't think that this is the trail leading down
into Allaria."
"But if we left the caves by the route that you came in by, then it must be." "You'd think so, wouldn't you. But I'm almost sure that it is not. Could that witch have enchanted us so we'd go astray?" "Perhaps. Or the hellhound, maybe. Well, there's nothing we can do but keep on following the path. Sooner or later we are bound to encounter someone, and then we can find out where we are." As they walked onwards, Fred asked Astra: "How did you know that witch's name? Jexebelle was it?" "An Aqualarian legend says that an evil witch of that name lives in the caves, and that even the dragon leaves her well alone. That must have been her. We are fortunate to have escaped her clutches."
