Fred let out an expletive when they found a waterfall where the exit
should have been. "At least there's one consolation," Astra said.
"I can wash away some of the dirt. You'd better have your bandages back
first, though. There's no point in getting them soaked, and my scratches
should
have just about stopped bleeding by now. Anyway, it should do them good to
be
bathed."
She handed the now rather bloody bandages to Fred, who was unsure what to do with them, and stepped into the waterfall. She stifled a shriek, for as well as the water making her grazed ankle sting it was very cold. She emerged after five minutes feeling reasonably clean, though wishing that Fred had packed a towel. She rubbed herself dry as best she could with the non-bloody parts of the bandages, At least the air in the caverns was reasonably dry, so she shouldn't remain damp for long. "We must have taken a wrong turning at some point," Fred said, "for I had expected the exit to be here. I have a map, but it's not a very good one. I suppose that we had better retrace our steps, and I'll try to spot the place where I went wrong." "We might do better to try to follow the stream flowing away from the waterfall. At some point that must flow out of the side of the mountain, and we may be able to get out that way." "Or we could try to get out by the way that the water comes in". "That would involve climbing up the waterfall, though," Astra pointed out. "Even if we could manage it, we'd get soaked. That wouldn't much matter to me, but it would to you."
