Fred had a sense of foreboding. It had been such a vivid dream. Had it
been a warning of
some kind about his forthcoming quest? And what sort of quest could be of
such import
that it would justify the King taking the unusual step of coming to the
Manor D'Honaire
rather than summoning Fred to come to the palace?
Promptly at noon Fred was escorted into the room where his audience of the King was to take place. The King was already there, seated in an opulent chair. Standing beside him was his daughter Exotica - tall, straight-backed, pale-skinned, dark-haired, dressed in a burgundy-coloured gown and immaculately made up and coiffed. She looked very grim, so that at this moment she would better be described as handsome rather than beautiful. In the background stood Fred's father, the Duke D'Honaire. Fred had not expected to see the princess, and he was nervous at being in the presence of the King. Thus he said the first thing that came into his head: "Hello, Princess. I nearly didn't recognise you with your clothes on." The King's jaw dropped in astonishment and the Duke could be heard to groan, as Fred wished for the earth to swallow him up.
