Andrea realised that the courtyard must be a sunken one, since it was well
below the level of the balcony, and she had not climbed any stairs since
entering the castle. It seemed to her that if she stepped into the basket
then, by pulling on the appropriate lever, she should be able to descend
to the courtyard. And getting into the courtyard would give her access to
the lower levels of the castle, where she might expect to find the
kitchens and perhaps the Dishcloth.
She checked the ropes and the basket for signs of rot, but everything seemed to be sound. Nor did the pulleys show any sign of rust. Considering the state that the rest of the castle was in, that was surprising. Taking a deep breath, she stepped into the basket, and pulled on what she thought was the right lever.
