Fred shook his head. He must have swallowed too much water on the swim
over. He scurried forward and peeked over the side of a large crate. Men and women were target practicing with crossbows on a scarcrow set against a thick wooden wall. Fred scurried back to Alicia. "Nothing to worry about but let's hop back in the drink and come aboard at a different set of docks. It's a bit crowded here with drunken goobers shooting off crossbows at expensively dressed scarecrows." The two came aboard at a deserted dock. They crept through the city at a fast pace, using their noses to avoid the most people. But just at the town wall...disaster struck. Between the town wall and the first row of dark, silent houses was a twenty foot wide section of dirt. This was installed so any invaders would clearly be in line of sight from archers installed in specialized hideaways perched like vultures on the top of each house. A young child in slippers had been wandering aimlessly through the residental section for much of the night. (It had taken some time to get this far). Couldn't have been more then five. And this child, a girl, had spotted the two furred just as they were about to scale the town wall. "Doggy!" she cried, running across the dirt. Before they could do anything, Alicia was grabbed in a bear hug. Fred looked around. Nobody had seen them. What now?
