"Who is Sir Josh?" Astra asked.

"One of the noblest of the King's knights," Fred replied. "He was the last person before me to attempt this quest. When he didn't come back, we knew that he must have failed, and probably died horribly. There would have been no dishonour in that - but this!"

He turned back to the projection. "How did you find out this? Could there be some mistake?"

"I'm afraid not," Filial said. "We received a message from him only a short time ago. It said: Greetings. This is the Dragon. You may have noticed that my tactics have changed recently, with less burning of fields and destroying of villages, and more capturing of beautiful maidens, princesses for preference. That's because I, Sir Josh, now inhabit the mind of the Dragon. To bond with him was the only way to save my life. Naturally, in bonding I became evil. You can tell Lord Fred that he's got no chance of killing me. And tell Princess Astra that she may have escaped, but she won't be free for long. Yours in evil, Dragon Josh."

1. Velus whined. It seemed that he was beneath Dragon Josh's notice, which was slightly humiliating. On the other hand, it might improve his chances of staying alive.
2. "That's all the news I have for now," Filial said, and she promptly vanished.
3. "This map is useless," Fred said. "Do you know where we can find him?"
