Fred could see that the branches of the high trees were swaying and
rustling as if something very large were moving through them. Then, from
out of the forest, came the shambling form of an oliphant!
"Holy whistling Pete!" cried out Fred who had heard of such beasts but had only seen a few woodcuts in some books. The beast was a behemoth, the length of three carriages, as high as a hotel and as wide as three scullerymaids. It's skin was tough-looking like bark and its huge head was covered in black hair, as was its smallish tail. The oliphant trudged along, snuffling this way and that, until finally it noticed Fred. It froze, then it roared at him! Fred had never heard such a frightful noise in all his life... not even at a Brittany Spearchuckers concert! He ran from that beast, past the bleached skeleton, past the sandy beach, past the lonely-looking shack that had the word Bertramus written in coal on the front door, past the large rock under the shade of a bumbleberry tree. Fred ran and ran and ran until he was all pooped out. Then he walked until he could do so no more. By that time it was half past noon and he was far from that beast and farther from that beach. Fred found himself in a plain of high grasses. He could see, however, trails within the grass. Some appeared to be animal trails, others looked more fit for carts. He followed one of the wider ones until he came to a small hamlet. "Wilkommen to Bruderburg" said the sign. "I wonder if anyone knows about the Seven Sisters?" said Fred out loud. "WHAT?!?" came a cry to his left. Upon turning Fred saw a man, no higher than his waist and twice as wide. He wore the clothing of a ranger and held a staff. "What did you say?" asked the man. "Well," said Fred. "I need to find the Seven Sisters." "Why?" "Well, because I need to kill the no-good, terrible, awful Dragon of the Southern Caves. And I read that beyond the seven sisters, in the home of the sinless tester of monks, ye shall find the answer to slaying the great wyrm." "Where did you read that?" asked the short man. "Well, uh, you see.... um, to make a long story short... uh, on some bones." "WHAT?!?"
