A Matter of Naming

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20990

Fred trusts his strange companion; after all she has almost certainly just saved his life. So he takes the pellet and swallows it. "Aren't you going to have one yourself?" he asks. "You are obviously hurting too. What's the matter with your right arm?"

"Got hit by a rock that it threw at me. Hadn't realised the thing would be capable of that. Badly bruised, but I don't think it's broken. I must save the pellets in case you need them, for I was created solely to help you."

"Don't you have any free will in the matter?"

"Not sure. It seems to me like it's what I want to do, but maybe it's just a compulsion that I'm under."

"Have a pellet. I insist." A little reluctantly, she takes one from the pouch and swallows it.

"How did you kill the thing?" Fred asks her.

"My spear seemed ineffective against it, so I borrowed your sword since you weren't capable of using it for the time being. I hope you don't mind."

"Of course not. You saved my life. But I don't even know your name, or what manner of creature - if that's not too insulting - you are."

"Belboz did not bother to give me a name. As to what I am, that does not have a name either, for I am the only one of my kind."

Fred feels sorry for this strange, brave, beautiful woman. He isn't sure whether he would have asked Belboz for help if he had known what the result would be. Though if he hadn't, he would probably be dead by now.

"You must have a name," he says. "Why don't you choose one for yourself?"

"I wasn't programmed with any information on names. If you think that I should have one, would you choose one for me, please?"

  1. Inspired by her wings, Fred calls her Avia.
  2. Fred calls her Beatrice.
