Fred's initial idea had been to try to overhaul Sir Adrian and get to the
dragon first. But his train of thought now suggested that his first
priority ought to be to return to the Allarian capital, Caemlyn, and warn
the King about the possible Tetrilonian plot. That course had a big
practical advantage, too: he knew how to get back to Caemlyn, whereas he
no longer had any idea of where he might find the dragon.
But it seemed that even finding Caemlyn might be much more difficult than expected when, on leaving the mines, they found themselves not in the foothills of the Shreken mountain range but in the midst of a desert. Fred looked around him open-mouthed, and Irena seemed equally startled. "Surely this can't be just an illusion?" Fred said. "It's too big for that. But if it's real, how can it be possible? Surely even the Tetrilonians don't have magic that could do this?" "The Tetrilonians?" queried Irena, looking puzzled. Fred had not intended to tell Irena of his suspicions, but now he had slipped up he decided that there was no longer any point in being other than frank. "Sir Adrian could not have set up something like this on his own. I thought that Tetrilonia might be behind it, in an attempt to make Allaria look foolish." Irena replied:
