I was astonished by the man's response. It was hard to believe that even
so big a ship as this one could still be spaceworthy. I could tell from
the fact that there were no bits of metal extruding from the edges of the
hole in her hull, that the damage was not the result of an internal
explosion blowing outwards. Therefore it must have been caused by
something hitting the ship. Something big enough to make a hole that size
must surely have gone on to cause an enormous amount of damage inside her.
Besides, if they didn't intend to abandon ship, why had they set off the distress beacon? Maybe it had been triggered automatically, though. The only theory I could come up with was that they had something on board which they were not prepared to abandon, whatever the risk. Be that as it may, my appropriate response was fairly obvious:
