Lame Duck

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20794

I was astonished by the man's response. It was hard to believe that even so big a ship as this one could still be spaceworthy. I could tell from the fact that there were no bits of metal extruding from the edges of the hole in her hull, that the damage was not the result of an internal explosion blowing outwards. Therefore it must have been caused by something hitting the ship. Something big enough to make a hole that size must surely have gone on to cause an enormous amount of damage inside her.

Besides, if they didn't intend to abandon ship, why had they set off the distress beacon? Maybe it had been triggered automatically, though.

The only theory I could come up with was that they had something on board which they were not prepared to abandon, whatever the risk. Be that as it may, my appropriate response was fairly obvious:

  1. "All right. You can have some of my fuel."
  2. "My ship's not atomic-powered. I might be able to get you some fuel from Ragan IV, though - at a price."
  3. "But there's no way of refuelling you in space! You'd need to be docked at a space-station and have the right equipment available."
