Ghosts

The Seeker's heart leaps. No! He's not ready to deal with people yet! Not like this! He looks down at his new body. He hasn't dealt with this yet! He hasn't even begun to get used to being female!

He realizes that he can't leave whoever it is waiting, though. He clears his throat and calls out, "Come in!"

He's shocked by the sound of his voice. Until now, he's remained mostly silent, and even when he has spoken, he's been distracted by... other things. Now, though, nearing his voice call out clearly through the house, he realizes once again how strange this all is.

He's again shocked when the door opens. He instantly recognizes the person who walks in.

"Hi, Mark," he says.

This is strange. It couldn't have been more than an hour or an hour and a half ago that he was Mark -- that he died as Mark -- and yet here he stands before him, very alive.

Mark walks in. "Hi." He pauses. "Alyssa?"

The Seeker remembers that he's a nearly-identical twin, and realizes that Mark must not be able to tell whether he's Karen or Alyssa. "Yeah."

Mark blushes. "Sorry. You two look too much alike." He looks at The Seeker. "Did you lose your comb, or something?"

The Seeker runs his hand over his hair. "Yeah."

Mark nods and begins looking around the room. "I heard your father was away today, so I thought I'd visit Karen. So... where is Karen?"

"She's out today, doing some... shopping." The Seeker realizes that Mark might not know about Karen's plan to run away, so he has to be careful what he says.

Mark sits down. "I'll wait here."

"She'll be a while," The Seeker says.

Mark shrugs. "I don't have anything better to do. I have to get away from my father for a while."

The Seeker sighs. He really wants some time alone. "She'll be gone for a few hours. She probably won't be back until this afternoon."

Mark looks at him for a moment, then sighs. "All right, all right." He pauses. "I really need to meet with her, but... I can't talk to her in public. Our parents might hear about it." He pauses again. "Okay, I'll go, but... before I leave, I have to tell you something."

"What?" The Seeker says.

Mark says, "Alyssa..."

1. "...I love you. I've always loved you."
