The Seeker takes his mind off his problems for a short while by examining
himself
in the mirror that he has found. He sees what he had expected to see: the
face of Alyssa as he remembers
it from when he first described her. It's a face very much like Karen's,
but not exactly
the same - though twins, Karen and Alyssa are not identical twins.
His/Alyssa's face is somehow
rather softer and less mature than Karen's. In repose, it has a slightly
nervous
expression. He sees shoulder-length dark brown hair
(rather untidy, as Karen had pointed out) and expressive eyes.
That taken care of, The Seeker decides that the best way to further postpone having to think about his problems may be to attempt some of the chores, if he can work out what they are and how to do them. That way, at least he may escape being yelled at by Karen when she returns. The breakfast dishes are first, he supposes. There is no running water of course, but there is a bucket. He takes it outside, finds a well, and manages to fill the bucket with water without getting too wet himself. Bringing it into the kitchen, he finds something which looks like a scourer, and manages to remove the worst of the food remains from the crockery and cutlery. He finds a cloth which he hopes is the tea towel, dries everything off and puts it away. Then he takes the bucket of now dirty water outside and empties it. He is beginning to feel tired already - water is heavy stuff to move around - and the day has barely begun. Nor has he the faintest idea what he is supposed to do next.
