The Seeker is relieved to find that his reincarnation doesn't appear to
have resulted in
the nymphomania which normally seems to result in Addventure whenever a
male finds himself
in a female body. At least he is free to concentrate on his problems
without being
distracted by raging hormones. He decides that he has too little
information to make
any decision as yet. Hopefully the battle is still some months away, even
if it
is going to occur in this timeline. The fact
that Karen and Alyssa haven't yet run off to join the New Amazons strongly
suggests
as much. If it comes to it, he's not at all sure that he won't put trying
to get peace in Zendara above everything else. After all, he's seen
that battlefield littered
with corpses, and nobody could see that without being deeply affected by
it.
He ponders, not for the first time, on what happens to those in Addventure whose bodies are usurped. He hopes that Alyssa's own consciousness has not been snuffed out, and that she can reclaim her own body from him before too long. (For convenience, this author is going to continue to use male pronouns when referring to The Seeker.) He wonders what the busy day ahead that Karen referred to will consist of. Even if formal schooling is available for children other than those of the nobility, at fifteen or so he and Karen are probably considered too old for that. He supposes that they will spend their time doing household chores; as females in Zendara it is unlikely that they would be allowed to do anything that could be considered as "men's work". He hopes that he won't be expected to do anything that is an acquired skill, such as knitting or embroidery. Since Karen was wearing a dress similar to his own, he assumes that, in spite of regaining consciousness when lying in bed, he is wearing a day dress rather than a nightdress. He doesn't stop to investigate what he might be wearing underneath it, but finds a pair of slippers and puts them on. There is a pitcher of water beside the bed, so he splashes some over his face, finds a comb on the dressing table and drags it through his hair until he hopes it is presentable. (He is sure there must be a mirror hidden away somewhere - how could a teenage girl, even in this society, be expected to manage without one? - but he can't find it. He finds his way to the kitchen, where Karen is getting breakfast. "Couldn't you find your comb?" she asks sarcastically. Maybe he hasn't made as good a job of his hair as he'd hoped. There is no sign of their father, which is something of a relief. He asks Karen where he is. She replies:
