Karen and The Seeker prepare to fight the villagers. The Seeker really
doesn't want to fight, but he realizes that they have no other choice,
especially because the men have probably seen them by now. Unfortunately,
he's avoided getting in any fights so far in his life, except when he was
Aaron, so he has no expertise at fighting whatsoever. He hopes that
Karen's a skillfull warrior.
By now the girl has reached them, with the men a short distance behind. Her face is bruised, and her eyes are wide with terror. She carries a small dagger. The Seeker asks her, "What did you do?" She looks at him. "I... I don't know. My father... he was angry... and he... and I..." She breaks off. The Seeker can see that she's too agitated to be of much help until he and Karen get her away from the villagers. The Seeker looks around him quickly, then sees a pitchfork leaning against a farmhouse nearby. He grabs it, then steps protectively in front of the girl. Then the villagers are upon them. They shout at you in anger. One of them says, "Let us have the girl! It'll be much easier on both of you." "Wait," says a man at the head of the group, regarding Karen, "this girl is a New Amazon! Capture her, but don't kill her." The Seeker wonders if this is Karen's father. "What about the boy?" says another man. The leader grins cruelly. "Kill him." Some of the men draw daggers, and one man draws a sword, but the others remain unarmed. Then they attack. The man with the sword charges at The Seeker. The Seeker swings the pitchfork and knocks him aside. Another man, carrying a dagger, runs toward him. The Seeker thrusts at the man's hands, knocking the dagger to the ground. The man screams in pain. The Seeker cringes as he realizes that he's hurt somebody. Another man comes at him from the side. The Seeker turns and kicks him to the ground. Then he sees that the man carrying the sword has gotten to his feet again, and is approaching him. The Seeker swings the pitchfork again, but before it hits the man, the man hits it with his sword, and it breaks in half. Realizing that the pitchfork is useless, he tosses it aside. He wants to see how Karen and the girl are faring, but he doesn't have time. The men are pressing him, and he's having trouble fending them off; he can't worry about the others. Then he feels something hit his back, and he falls and hits the ground roughly. He rolls onto his back, then sees that the man carrying the sword stands over him. He's lifted the sword over his head, ready to strike.
