Canine Alarms

You carefully approach the shop door and try to break in. It's not as difficult as you would think; the lock is a bad lock.

Then you hear a loud noise on the other side of the door. No! A dog! You step away from the door and crouch behind an empty barrel next to the door. You wait in silence; you're sure that the farmer heard you.

After a moment you hear a low voice speaking inside the shop. You hear a thud, and the dog whimpers. Then it's silent. The talking continues for a moment, then it,.too is silent. You sigh in relief.

Your heart jumps as you hear the shop door open. You can't see anything from where you hide, but you know the shopkeeper is looking around, trying to find what the dog was barking at.

You stay perfectly still for a long, breathless moment as you wait for the shopkeeper to see you. If he finds you, you're in trouble. He'll shout and alert the men in the inn across the street -- if they weren't already alerted by the dog. Then you'll be doomed. You could easily escape from the shopkeeper, but probably not from the men at the inn. From the sounds of their celebrating, there are probably at least five or ten men still awake in there, and they're probably all armed. Undoubtedly you'll be treated like a common thief.

You wish Aaron and Sarah were here, but they stayed at the outskirts of the village. On the other hand, it's probably best that they're there; if you're captured and thrown in prison they may be able to help you escape. If you're not back in and hour they're to come and investigate.

You continue to hide in silence, waiting to hear the door close but preparing to run if the shopkeeper finds you. After a while...
