To Town

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20536

You discuss your options and quickly dismiss the idea of avoiding the village altogether. You need provisions, and if you could get horses as well that would be a big bonus, especially with Aaron's ankle still sore. Sarah's gold coins won't stretch to buying them, though. As well as food and horses, warmer clothing would also be a good idea. Not only does the weather seem to be turning colder, but as you approach the pass you will be climbing several thousand feet, which will make it colder still.

Going openly into the village seems risky. Even if Samuel has no spies here (which Aaron points out as being a possibility - though a remote one), women with short haircuts and dressed like you and Sarah might arouse suspicion. What certainly would arouse suspicion is that you and Aaron still have a chain attached to each wrist from your time imprisoned in Samuel's mens' wagon. They are too bulky for you to hide them up your sleeves. One possibility would be for Sarah to go into the village alone to buy some food and warmer clothes, but that won't get you horses. On the other hand, waiting till nightfall and then stealing what you want would also be risky, though the delay would be more than made up by the greater speed that you could make on horseback thereafter. There's also the moral question, of course; none of you is very happy at the idea of stealing, though you yourself stole a horse from the abbey not so long ago.

Since it is clear that Sarah is very nervous at the thought of going into the village on her own, in the end you decide to wait until after dark, and then to try to find some food and warm clothes. You will leave the coins in payment, and won't steal any horses. You wait till a couple of hours after nightfall. Then you creep into the village. Apart from the sound of laughter and conversation from the village inn, all seems to be quiet. The moon provides enough light for you to find a shop; indeed, in this smallish village as far as you can tell it is the only shop. It seels both food and clothes (and a wide range of other things).
