The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20496

Through the darkness you can see some movement as Alyssa tugs on her chains. After a moment she says, "They're loose."

"Good," you say. You're about to tell her to pull the chains out of the wall when you remember that it's still daylight out. "Wait where you are for now," you say. "We'll stay here until nightfall."

And so you wait. You sit in an anxious silence. Tonight you're going to escape, and you fear what may lie ahead. Though you can't see her, her silence tells you your sister feels the same.

The light grows gradually fainter. Half an hour into your waiting you hear the door open. You cringe at the sound. Will this ruin your plan?

Instead of your father, a man dressed in simple armor and carrying a lightweight sword enters, locking the door behind him. He gives you and your sister a hunk of stale bread and a cup of warm water, then unlocks your chains and tells you to eat.

You consider escaping then, but glancing at his weapon, you decide against it. You eat. Though they don't make you feel much better, at least the meager provisions take the edge off your hunger and thirst.

The guard takes your cups, chains you and Alyssa to the wall again, and leaves. You hear the door lock. You and your sister are alone again.

"If he's stationed outside," you say grimly, "that could be a problem."

Alyssa lets out a sound, half-agreeing, half-sighing.

The next hours pass agonizingly slowly. You wait impatiently. You and Alyssa discuss your plans a bit, but otherwise you're silent.

Finally, the time comes. You judge that everyone in the village is probably asleep by now. You tell Alyssa to pull her chains out, and you work on your own. After a few minutes you pull them out.

You stiffly stand. You're weighed down by your chains, but at least you're free.

You and Alyssa approach each other, and you get your first glimpse of your sister since the battle. You're surprised. Her face is nearly identical to yours. She has the same features, the same dark brown hair, the same expressive eyes. She also wears a dress identical to your own. At the same time, though, it's much different. While you could be mistaken for a girl much older than you, your sister actually looks younger then her age, somehow. There's a certain innocence and naivete in her expression, as well as a nervous fear. Also, whereas your hair is cropped closely to your head, hers falls over her shoulders.

She looks at you as well. "You're wounded. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," you say simply. "Come on, let's go."

She nods.

You walk to the door. Fortunately, it's made of a relatively lightweight wood. With some work, you might be able to break it down. Unfortunately, if you do you risk waking up everyone in the area.

  1. Before you have a chance to decide, you hear the sound of a key in the door.

The Seeker (I sense another fight scene coming up. *Sigh* Who thought a story about a warrior would be so violent?)
