You head off in the direction that Aaron took. Somewhat to your surprise, Aaron
didn't seem to have a horse, so at least there is some chance that you might
overtake him. He probably had a start of four or five hours, but hopefully he
will have to stop to sleep at some stage. At the moment there is a fairly
obvious path, and fortunately a nearly full moon to see it by; you hope that it
will take you all the way to the pass.
As you walk, you wonder who Prince Samuel is. Assuming King Eric to be about the same age as Aaron, then Samuel seems more likely to be his brother than his son. Was Aaron wrong about Eric's sympathies, or is there a rebellion going on in Daria? Perhaps Samuel has even overthrown Eric recently and Aaron has not yet heard? You guess that news travels slowly in this primitive time. (Primitive? you ask yourself. Why do I have this feeling that it's primitive? Surely it's my own time?) You are still wearing your armour. You consider whether you should discard it and your weapon, as Aaron had advised, but somehow you feel more secure wearing both it and a sword. You wonder why wearing armour should seem so natural to you. After all, judging by the glimpse you had of your reflected face you are aged only sixteen or so, so surely you cannot have been wearing armour for very long. Mentally, however, you somehow feel considerably older.
