Chuc raised his arms and murmured an incantation, "Shurov Thariel."
Suddenly the small area about them was bathed in a bright, noonday light.
The three men nearly screamed. They saw Elashi, kneeling on the sand and
whimpering. That was bad enough, but the cause of her dilemma was worse.
They saw a man, or something that resembled a man. It was tall with
strong muscles rippling under its tattered shirt. Below the waste it had
only a loin cloth and the brown hair on its legs grew thick. Its arms
were long, too long in fact, reaching well below its knees. Its skin was
a dark green, and this was not all that was wrong, for from its mouth
protruded two of the largest tusks the group had ever seen!
"Is, is it a man?" whispered Fredric. "Do pigs have wings?" answered Val. "Could it have once been a man?" asked Chuc. "Only the gods know," answered Val. "It doesn't matter, though, it has Elashi and I will not let anything harm her." The men were scared, Elashi was terrified, and the green thing that walked on two legs? Who knows? Its eyes were near shut and one hand was hovering above its face, it held onto a stone-headed axe with a very tight grip, and its body was definitely trembling. Then the light went out! Val rushed to where he had seen Elashi, Elashi rolled her body closer to where she had seen her friends, Chuc began intoning another spell, and Fredric stood almost paralyzed in the darkness. "Shurov Poloc Thariela!" The moonlight once again competed with a mystical radiance. This time it was less powerful than before, the area brightened smaller in circumference. The four friends looked about. They were alone. The strange creature was gone. "Uh, Chuc," said Val. "You didn't..." "Don't look at me, Val. I just told the night sky to light up... it never fails when you most need it." "Your magicks?" said Val. "No, the fact that magic never lasts as long as I like, is as intense as I wish, and sometimes does not do what I ask. The fact, too, that using magic in the same vicinity too rapidly depletes the fount from which it comes. If I try doing this without my things a third or fourth time we'll barely have lantern-light." "I take it that means we better go," said Val. "The sooner the better," said Chuc. And so they returned to the ship. Elashi was silent the whole time, as was Fredric. Once aboard, Val took watch while the others attempted to get some sleep.
