The sudden writhing forms of the wolves caused the bears to fear some
mischief on the part of the humans. They moved away from the men and the
bears waved their arms in the warding hexes of their native lands. The
pirates didn't understand what was happening, but they knew enough to take
advantage of a situation when it presented itself. They ran to the small
boats bobbing by the rocks along the beach. They boarded them and began
rowing to the main ship.
The bears let them go; they had eyes, ears and noses only for the sickly forms of the wolves. The foxes, too, were stunned by the sight of the predators reeling and rolling on the edge of the beach. Everyone was holding their snouts for the smell emanating from the wolves was horrible. But finally the wolves calmed, and when they did so they had only six words for the other clans: "WHY DID YOU LET THEM GO?!?" Some of the foxes and some of the bears began explaining their fear of witchcraft and sorcery, others commented on the smell, most just stared - at the wolves, at the men in their sea-worthy ship. "Crap!" said Fred. "Well, yes," said Denis who was standing next to him. "It sorta does smell like crap." "No!" yelled Fred. "Sure it does," agreed Alicia. "That's not what I meant!" growled Fred. "The men are gone, on the ship, across the water, and they are bound to sail away!" "Bingo for the dingo!" huffed a burly wolf. "Shut up all of you!" yelled Carradene. "What is a dingo?" whispered Fred to Alicia. "Did he just insult me?" Carradene continued: "We've got to get to that ship before those men leave!" "Actually," whipered Alicia. "I'm not sure, it doesn't sound like an insult." "But how?" asked Moran. "Minestus' Curse will burn us alive the minute we swim out farther than the reef!" "Maybe not the word, but the way he said it," whispered Fred. "Open your eyes!" grunted Carradene. "That ship is within the bounds!" "Well, I guess he did then," whispered Alicia. "Let's go!" yelled Moran. "Let's go!!!" repeated many from the three clans, and those who could swim jumped into the water and began paddling as fast as they could.
