The Never Ending Quest - Episode 2012

"Strike him, you stupid clod!!!" hissed Thessamar Astra at Fred. He stood there, however, sword unsheathed yet unmoving. Within his brain he saw images of his youth, he tasted fruits long gone sour, he smelled the scents of things that were no more – and he felt as if he were only twelve years of age. His memories pulsated, his mind grew clouded.

"Hit him you fool!" said the warrior maiden again. "Are you some dunce under the spell of death?!?"

Spell? Lord Fred's mind wavered, shifted, focused. His doubts as to the dragon were dispelled, his shock at the skeletal monster dissipated. He lifted his sword and struck the vile creature – his blow severing the right arm at the elbow! The creature did not stop, it continued, clawing with its other hand and Fred struck again and again and again. Within moments the skeleton was nothing but splinters upon the stone floor. Thessamar was at his side as was Velus, who took a rather doggish interest in the bony remains of the creature.

Fred marveled at the magicks that made him forget his own heritage; he recalled clearly now that he was a dragon-slayer; he had been taught upon his father's knee and that of master Crom; he had been shown the weak spot of the dreaded wyrm, and wyrm indeed it was; he remembered the teachings against dragon-speak; he recalled the many woodcuts and sketches that illustrated the look of the creature. Feelings of being a neophyte vanished as the magic wore off. And the feelings were replaced by anger – how dare the beast play with his mind so!!!

"Good work...for a man," said Astra and began searching the table of the scribe. Fred looked at her with disdain but also began looking through the papers and things. Their search for anything of value was interrupted, however, by the soft growl of Velus. Looking up, Fred and Astra saw that the other scribes had ceased their activity and had begun to come towards them. Even as Velus' growl grew louder at least three more skeletons were within striking range and some seven more were closing in! Astra looked about for anything she could use as a weapon, her best choice being the thigh bone of the first scribe, Fred had his sword in hand, and Velus barred his teeth. If it was a fight they wanted, it was fight they would get!
