Alyssa cursed inwardly. She should have known better than to trust the little creature. This
day so far had brought her nothing but death. She tried to remember what she'd been
taught in the Academy of the Sangreal about fighting demons, because she knew from the
darkness of this thing's eyes that this was what it was. She remembered that swords and
other merely physical weapons were useless against such beings, and only sacred rites
could destroy them. But her expedition's cleric, Enrique, had died hours ago. Yet there
were certain words of power that could be used against lower-level demons.
