The strange creature that was approaching them had the body of a man up to
the waist,
but the upper half of a dolphin! "It's a manmer!" Astra said. "I've heard
legends
about them, but the tales said that they were thought never to stray very
far from the sea."
"How does it breathe out of the water?" Fred asked. "Surely it has gills?" "That upper half is like a dolphin, not a fish," Astra pointed out. "It breathes just like you or I do. I suppose I should really say 'he' rather than 'it'. There's no doubt at all that it's a male." Fred thought that Astra was looking at the manmer rather admiringly, but perhaps he was imagining it. "Is it dangerous?" he asked. "No, it's totally armless," Alex said, and laughed loudly at his own joke. Fred supposed that as he was only seventeen allowances had to be made for him.
