Following Their Noses

The code of barks that Fred and Velus had set up was not sophisticated enough to convey "urine", but the teen-dog was able to make it clear that he had detected an indication that the dragon might be nearby. Fred drew his sword and Thessamar grasped her make-shift club more tightly, and then they continued cautiously along the tunnel they had been following.

Soon the noses of Fred and Thessamar were also able to detect the sweet, not unpleasant, scent. "What is that smell?" Fred asked.

"I recognise it," Thessamar replied. "For all his great magical powers, the dragon doesn't appear very concerned about personal hygeine. There was always a whiff of that smell in his presence. But now let us be quiet. We don't want to alert him that we are near."

The tunnel continued for another hundred yards or so. As they proceeded, the smell got gradually stronger. Then the tunnel emerged at a point high up the wall of the cave that was the dragon's:

1. Lair.
2. Toilet.
