Sweet Talking the Gorgon

"Come on!" the gorgon said in her surprisingly pleasant voice - though this time that voice betrayed a hint of impatience. "You should be able to walk a little now."

"Yes, I can," Toby conceded. "But tell me, what's a nice girl like you doing working for the dragon?"

"Nice girl if you like greenish-black skin and snakes for hair," the woman said bitterly. "Believe it or not, but I was a normal woman once, till I fell into the Queen's clutches. She did this to me."

"So why do you serve her, then?" Sir Toby asked.

"In the hope that if I serve her well she may one day restore me. But I'm beginning to fear that I'm altogether too useful to her as I am."

"So why don't you stop working for her, then?"

"I daren't do that. She could make things a lot worse for me than this. She's a very powerful sorceress, you know."

1. Whilst they talked, the gorgon moved come close enough to the crevice for Sir Toby to take her by surprise and head butt her over the edge.
2. Sir Toby tried to pump the gorgon for more information.
3. Sir Toby let the gorgon lead him through the tunnels.
