Asking For Help

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 1939

As they walk through the bar, they overhear some of the whispers: "Did you see the fox-man?... Never seen a woman that stacked...Seven babies, there were. I counted 'em...Must be witchcraft involved...I reckon the normal one must be a powerful mage..."

The group makes itself comfortable in Sigin's office. Once he has been assured that they cannot be overheard, Synizn explains their mission to Sigin, and the background to it, with Fred and Astra filling in bits of the story as necessary. Synizn finishes: "My original plan was to use the Crystallic to transport us directly to Atlantis, but then I had second thoughts. What if something were to happen to me before I had the chance to conjure up a ship for the return journey? Fred, Astra and the babies - see, I got it right that time! - would be stranded. And anyway, even were we experienced sailors, the three of us couldn't handle an ocean-going vessel by ourselves. There would also be the risk that we might materialise underwater if I were to make the slightest mistake in specifying the destination. Hiring a ship and sailing there seemed like a much safer option, even though it might add a month or so to how long this all takes. But what crew would be willing to risk sailing to Atlantis? Then I thought of you, Sigin."

At the start of the discussion, Synizn had asked the barkeep to bring them a gallon flagon of ale and a half-gallon flagon of cow's milk. The man had looked as if he might query this, but then the demi-fox had given him such a look as to send him hurrying to comply. Now, an hour later, Astra makes to pour herself another glass of milk (to her annoyance, Synizn had suggested that it would be wiser for her to leave the ale alone if she didn't want to risk her own milk becoming alcoholic). To her surprise, she finds that the flagon is empty. She has drunk the lot! She also realises that her breasts are beginning to feel uncomfortably full. Unless Synizn has miscalculated, she guesses that this is a sign that it is nearly feeding time for the babies. Sure enough, within ten minutes the first has woken and started crying for its supper. That wakes most of the others, who also begin to cry. "Excuse me gentlemen, but I'm going to have to go into the corner of the room and turn my back on you," Astra says. "Please don't think me rude, but this lot can't be kept waiting." "I think we are almost finished, anyway," says Sigin. "The answer to the question that Synizn is about to ask me is:

  1. "Yes."
  2. "No."
