Only Trouble

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 19180

Queen Sovay stood within her Castle in Caemlyn and wondered at how they had reached this point. The pigeons cooed as she had read their vile messages. Her husband was down south with a detachment of the Troupes Divina. She knew he was safe, they were ten knights, each with their own squire and accompanied by two mounted archers, under the knights were twenty men-at-arms, twenty swordsmen in half-armor, and twenty-five unarmoured spearmen. One-hundred-five men in all, and her husband. They had left Caemlyn with the knowledge that a peasant uprising had occurred on the eastern edge of the Duchy of Trescent, they had begun their journey with the goal of squelshing the rebellious rabble and then of marching into the Duchy's capitol, they walked and rode with the knowledge that a Duke had taken things into his own hands without granting full disclosure to his Leige. The King and his Troupes Divina knew that that was a no-no.

At first King Emry had allowed the trouble to go on, let the Trescentmen and the rabble fight it out, let them kill themselves. Wait until clean-up becomes easier, but then the LeigeKing had the grand idea of showing his might by going there himself!

And so here he was conferring with his most trusted knight, Sir Toby. "Absollom, we don't know what to expect, but whatever we find we take the land back!"

Even as that was happening, Queen Sovay cried. It was she who had unfurled the packet from a southern pigeon; a packet with most startling news: "No! Penn can't be gone... no! Someone shall PAY!" She immediately sent a page on a speedy horse to bring this news to her husband, but she knew all too well the trouble with notes and horses... but a bird could not be taught to find one man in a wilderness. "Bloody waste! Penn is gone, after all the build-up, the work, the hopes... beaten down by a beast with no head?!!? NO!!!!" Then she looked at the most recent parchment. "And now this... Lord Fred has taken Trescent?!!? By the gods, what is he doing there? Sent to the Southern Caves he was supposed to kill the Dragon! Instead he runs to Trescent to... to.... what? make a new name for himself?!!? No, he is far too honorable... or is he? Ah well, it doesn't matter anyway, my husband shall reach that place and whether Lord Frederigo wishes or no, the one to rule that land shall be loyal to us and to us alone!"

Penn lay in waste. From the start of the attack it took four full days of fighting to make the Dragon retreat. "Bloody hell!" growled Duke Ospel. "All we did was go 'Boo!'... all we did was make it change its mind, make it go away... for the time being."

"Crudbucket, Sir," said Adjutant Ulfer. "We don't even know what exactly we were fighting... I mean, who ever heard tale or ever seen a lizard with no head?"

"Well, that's what the whitecloaks are here for," answered the Duke of this land.

Indeed, only one day before a group of four mages arrived and had set up a makeshift camp near to what was once the main plaza. They were commonly called whitecloaks for their habit of wearing white cloaks. But each member of the party practiced a different school of magic: these were aquamancy, life magic, geomancy, and herblore. The four were Helene who was originally from Collins and was Grey Spray; Ulrik, a WhiteHand; Handel was a White Stone; and Melisse bore the tattoo of the Green. The fear of the refugees of Penn had spread far and wide, and quickly. Considering the size of Penn, and its importance in both military strategy and economic strength, this was a blow to the whole Kingdom.

Back at Trescent Fred had no idea what had happened or was about to happen, after thinking about dukes and duchies and giving orders to his trusted companions, he had a mind only for one thing: ~~We must find Astra and Prince Cedrik!~~

  1. ... the woodsmen in the woods...
  2. ... the demon and her Prince...
  3. ... the ranger and his keeper...
  4. ...the Duke and his thoughts...
