Torres couldn't believe her eyes! "Mother?!!?" she screamed. "What is
going on?"
The Klingon woman looked with anger at her daughter. **"This is all YOUR fault!" "MY fault??? I don't even know what is going on!!!" **"Exactly!" Ptooh! she spit on the deck. "This is madness!" yelled Torres. "YOU are DEAD! So you aren't even here! I must be delusional!" **"I can be here if I want to!" "But shouldn't you be in the Land of the Dead?" **"Who's to say we're not there right now?" "THIS is Voyager, Mother! And if you know so much, tell me what happened?" The Klingon woman narrowed her eyes and whispered four words: **"It was the Velus."**** "Oh, no." gasped Torres. **translated into English from the Klingon **** "Velus" is a Klingon word that cannot be translated into English. It is used to describe a species of semi-sentient eyeballs that evolved on the Klingon moon. Though how such creatures could have developed on the moon remains a mystery, and many theories abound, one favorite comes from a mystic dream that a philosopher-butcher had nearly six hundred Klingon years ago. In this experience the butcher-philosopher saw the darkness of the cosmos and then a brilliant green flame erupt out of nothingness. From within that flame spewed forth one tiny eye, inert and lifeless. And yet the very darkness seemed to coalesce about that eye until a spark of life emerged. Many Klingons think that the butcher had too much bloodwine that night he had the dream, but a close following of Ferengi has attached itself to this idea and formed a cult (of course, their true god is Profit, and as such they have built souvenir shops all about the outskirts of the Klingon Empire which sell little pewter eyeballs - made for almost nothing, they are sold at a 1000 per cent mark-up)
