The Dragon's Proposition

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 18954

"Well, if it isn't Princess Exotica," the dragon said, "and wearing a fine suit of armour too. You look very good in it, I must say. You did not ask permission to borrow it, Tica, but I am willing to overlook that just this once. You'll return it to the storeroom when you have finished with it, I'm sure. And no doubt your friend will also return the items which he seems to have borrowed. I know Velus, of course, but perhaps you will introduce your armoured friend, Tica?"

Exotica did not like being called "Tica" - nobody had called her that since she was six years old - but it did not seem wise to object, in case the rather unsettling air of jollity which the dragon was currently affecting might be replaced by something much more hostile. "This is Lord Frederigo d'Honaire," she said.

"Ah, yes, the famous dragon slayer. I've heard all about you, Lord Fred, from my man in Caemlyn. I have a proposition for you. Why not join our little poker game? I don't suppose you have any money on you, so I propose other - rather more interesting - stakes. If you win, you and your friends get to go free. I'll even turn Velus back to human, and let you keep the items you 'borrowed' from my storeroom. But if I win, then the three of you remain here as my willing slaves. Do we have a deal?"

  1. Fred consulted with his companions, then said: "Yes."
  2. Fred consulted with his companions, then said: "No."
  3. Fred did not bother with consultation. He was a man of action. He simply drew his sword and ran at the dragon.
  4. Fred asked:" What if one of the other players wins?"
  5. Fred said: "Well, actually, I do have some money in my pack."
  6. Fred objected that the game of poker wouldn't be invented for hundreds of years.
